The Pedal House Story

Joey Foley was looking for a way out of finance when a friend persuaded him to try a famous New York cycling class. Being a triathlete, Joey didn’t think it would be for him - but that class changed his life. He became hooked on the energy of a great cycling experience and it inspired him to quit his job two weeks later.

After realizing he wasn’t “soulful” enough to become an instructor at the major cycling brands, he set out to pave his own path and create his own method. In 2017, Pedal House was born, co-founded by his partner Nada Foley.

Pedal House’s sister brand, Punch House, is a boxing bootcamp concept on West 21st Street.

How Did Pedal House Score Overall?

The full client experience at Pedal House was very good, achieving The Fit Guide Award Of Excellence.

The class was also excellent, winning our Class Experience Award of Excellence.

Pedal House is featured in our article The Best Cycling Studios And Experiences In New York.

The Highlights

The class was a highlight; it was introduced strongly and maintained great rhythm and momentum throughout.

The knowledgeable coach was also a standout. She maintained great energy during the whole session.

What Our Evaluator Had To Say

“I appreciated that reception asked about my previous experience with spin or cycling, and if I was new to the area."

”The coach clearly explained the aims of the class and that the purpose was to keep to the beat of the music while other exercises were layered in.”

“I loved how the candles that flanked the instructor's bike made the space glow, even when the lights were turned way down.”

What To Expect From A Pedal House Session

Pedal House serves up a blend of cycling they call ‘endurance HIIT’, offering 45, 60, and 90 minute classes. If you want an approach to cycling that is less about soulful mantras and more about high performance and personal growth, Pedal House will be a great fit.

Pedal House offers a music and rhythm-based cycling class that uses full-body movements that will give your legs, core, and arms a solid workout.

The Reception Service

Attempts to contact the club by phone went to voicemail, so we weren’t able to gather information ahead of our visit.

Upon arrival, our coach, who was also handling reception, greeted us warmly and provided a smooth check-in. The orientation was clear and concise, covering key areas like equipment, locker rooms, and workout towels. The coach’s friendly demeanor created a welcoming atmosphere, though we had to return with additional questions about water and class setup.

After class, the coach congratulated us and engaged in a brief chat about our experience. When asked, she confidently explained the available packages but didn’t proactively encourage a future visit. While the interaction was friendly and informative, a little extra effort in guiding first-timers could have elevated the experience.

The Class Experience

Pedal House received The Fit Guide Class Experience Award of Excellence, making it one of New York’s stand out offerings.

The class experience was positive, with the coach bringing great energy and consistent encouragement throughout. The music added a motivating rhythm, and the class structure flowed smoothly. As a first-timer, our evaluator found it a bit challenging to get their bearings at first, but the coach’s reassurance and advice to focus on cycling and gradually add movements helped ease any nerves.

More clarity in the instructions would’ve been helpful, as the music volume sometimes competed with the coach’s mic, making it hard to follow. A quick introduction to the class structure and its flow at the beginning would have also helped set expectations. Despite these minor points, the coach’s warmth, individual check-ins, and the class’s engaging vibe made for an enjoyable session.

The Equipment And Studio

The studio exuded professionalism and high quality, perfectly complementing the workout. The equipment was clean, in excellent condition, and top-notch. Bikes were thoughtfully pre-set with 3 lb weights, with heavier options available for those who preferred them, ensuring everyone had what they needed.

The training area was spacious, clean, and well-organized, providing a fresh and comfortable environment. Branding was prominent, with a large club logo displayed on a wood plank wall, mirroring the design of the reception area. The lighting, adjusted throughout the class to match the music and movements, created a dynamic atmosphere, with two large candles adding a subtle, steady glow.

The high-quality sound system (important for cycling sessions!) further elevated the experience, ensuring clear, energizing audio. Overall, the studio offered an impressive and cohesive workout environment, with strong branding and thoughtful design elements.

The Facilities And Public Areas

The club exuded a high-end, calming atmosphere, making it an inviting and relaxing space. Thoughtful touches, like eucalyptus in the showers and calming design elements in the reception area—such as wooden planked walls and candlelight—significantly enhanced the overall experience. Branding was cohesive and well-executed.

The changing and shower areas were clean, fresh, and well-stocked with amenities like deodorant, dry shampoo, and earplugs. However, there wasn't much seating in the changing area. The showers were in good condition, though the water was only lukewarm during our visit. The inclusion of eucalyptus added a spa-like touch.

Towels were neatly presented and easily accessible, with clearly labeled disposal points. Lockers were clean, well-sized, and equipped with combination locks, though they lacked hangers.

Beverage options were limited to bottled water for purchase, and no snacks or other refreshments were available. Overall, the club offered a polished, high-end experience.

Digital And Technology

The club's website was intuitive and user-friendly, making it easy for us to book a class and find the basics. However, the FAQ section and class details could have been more accessible from the top menu, especially for newcomers. Social media accounts featured consistent and professional content, but they weren't linked to the website.

Emails were personalized with the club’s logo, but lacked extra branding elements. The booking process didn’t provide clear info about late cancellation penalties.
