The Barry's Story

Barry’s proudly proclaims their cardio and strength hybrid training to be the ‘best workout in the world’, and have built a large and loyal global following.

Founded in 1998 in Los Angeles by Barry Jay, Barry’s became a pioneer of the boutique fitness scene and one of its most recognized brands.

The famous ‘red room’ has since expanded to over 70 locations across the globe in 14 countries including Singapore, Australia, UAE, Qatar, as well as other regions in Europe.

The company is now headed by former Barry’s instructor Joey Gonzalez, who is overseeing their further expansion with a mix of franchise and corporate-owned locations.

The Highlights

A highlight of the visit was our coach's close attention to form throughout the class, which helped us feel confident and assured.

The induction was also very helpful and personable and let us know what to expect, as well as a offering chance to connect with our coach.

What Our Evaluator Had To Say

“The coach’s encouragement and communication made it easy to follow the workout and stay motivated.”

“The pre-class induction left me feeling comfortable and prepared for the session.”

“The equipment in the studio was top quality and the branding throughout the club helped create an amazing vibe.”

What to Expect From A Barry’s Bootcamp Session

Try a session in the famous ‘red room’ and you’ll see it’s so much more than treadmill running and weights. The red light, the pumping music, and the strong presence of the instructors all come together to create one of the most memorable experiences in fitness.

Offering both 50 and 60-minute sessions, a typical Barry’s class involves coach-led treadmill running alternating with dumbbell and bodyweight strength work on “the floor”.

Each day’s strength work has a different focus, with some days serving up ‘Full Body’ strength and others focusing on specific areas such as ‘Chest, Back and Abs’ and ‘Abs and Ass’. For those that prefer strength work, Barry’s offers the ‘double floor’ option, which skips the treadmill and doubles up on the weights.

The Reception Service

Our pre-visit calls to the branch were unanswered. On arrival, the team welcomed us in and got us ready quickly for the session.

Interactions provided us with all we needed to know for our session, but a personal touch and more warmth would have provided a stronger welcome. After class, the team was very comfortable taking us through our options to continue training.

The Class Experience

Barry's Bootcamp Surry Hills received The Fit Guide 4-Star Class Experience Award, making it one of Sydney’s stand-out offerings.

During our anonymous visit, the coach expertly switched his focus from the ‘tread’ runners to the ‘floor’ lifters. He was energetic and injected humor into his session which lightened the mood and created a fun atmosphere. Overall, he was focused and motivating, communicating well what was coming next in the class.

The Equipment And Studio

The equipment and studio were of very high quality and all of the equipment was clean and functioned perfectly.

In typical Barry’s style, the sound and lighting systems were of high quality and the branding elements throughout were pleasing to the eye.

The Facilities And Public Areas

Workout and shower towels were provided free of charge. Lockers were provided with number locks. Free water refill stations were available.

As you would expect of Barry’s, the public areas were of a very high standard. Branding elements throughout the club were interesting and clearly added to the experience.

Dyson hairdryers in the changing rooms and a designated recovery station in the lobby, which featured massage guns, gave a high-end feel to the experience.

Digital And Technology

The brand’s social media pages were updated frequently and helped provide our evaluator with a clear picture of what to expect in the ‘red room’.

Confirmation emails received, combined with the simple booking process contributed to the evaluator feeling prepared and excited for their class.
