The Barry's Story

Barry’s proudly proclaims their cardio and strength hybrid training to be the ‘best workout in the world’, and have built a large and loyal global following.

Founded in 1998 in Los Angeles by Barry Jay, Barry’s became a pioneer of the boutique fitness scene and one of its most recognized brands.

After steady growth during its first decade, Barry’s opened its first international location in Norway in 2011, followed by London two years later. There are now currently seven locations in London, with single locations in both Manchester and Liverpool.

The famous ‘red room’ has since expanded to over 70 locations across the globe in 14 countries including Singapore, Australia, UAE, Qatar, as well as other regions in Europe.

The company is now headed by former Barry’s instructor Joey Gonzalez, who is overseeing their further expansion with a mix of franchise and corporate-owned locations.

The Highlights

The public areas were, as we’ve come to expect from Barry’s, striking, impressive, and truly industry-leading. The group class atmosphere built on this, with a positive coach delivering an energetic and lively experience.

What Our Evaluator Had To Say

It was a crowded and lively class with a positive atmosphere, and the workout was effective and challenging.

The equipment was clean, of high quality and there was a strong sense of orderliness and freshness throughout.”

The reception and waiting area of the studio was spacious and impressive in design.”

What to Expect From A Barry's Session

Try a session in the famous ‘red room’ and you’ll see it’s so much more than treadmill running and weights. The red light, the pumping music, and the strong presence of the instructors all come together to create one of the most memorable experiences in fitness.

Offering both 50 and 60-minute sessions, a typical Barry’s class involves coach-led treadmill running alternating with dumbbell and bodyweight strength work on “the floor”.

Each day’s strength work has a different focus, with some days serving up ‘Full Body’ strength and others focusing on specific areas such as ‘Chest, Back and Abs’ and ‘Abs and Ass’. For those that prefer strength work, Barry’s offers the ‘double floor’ option, which skips the treadmill and doubles up on the weights.

The Reception Service

Our pre-visit call to the club helped us feel prepared and excited for the session. In the club, the team was able to answer our questions about the workout and facility. After the class, the team was not comfortable discussing training options and packages, however.

The Class Experience

Barry's received our Recommended rating for the Class Experience.

Our coach was passionate and energetic, delivering a fun and upbeat experience. The session was busy and lively, with exercise demonstrations and explanations clearly and concisely delivered. Words of encouragement were given to the whole class, rather than individually.

The Equipment And Studio

The equipment and studio setup lived up to the Barry’s reputation in every way. The space was clean, the equipment was well-stocked and the ‘red room’ offered the famous Barry’s vibe. The treadmills were from the high-end brand Woodway.

The Facilities And Public Areas

Workout and shower towels were provided free of charge. Lockers were provided with number locks. Free water refill stations were available.

The public areas were clean, spacious, and striking in design. The shower design was also impressive, with a deep selection of high-quality amenities rounding off the five-star public areas.

Digital And Technology

The brand’s social media pages were active and provided the evaluator with a great idea of what to expect in their first class in the ‘red room’. Confirmation emails sent to the client combined with the simple booking process contributed to the evaluator feeling prepared and excited for their class.
