The Barry's Story

Barry’s proudly proclaims their cardio and strength hybrid training to be the ‘best workout in the world’, and have built a large and loyal global following.

Founded in 1998 in Los Angeles by Barry Jay, Barry’s became a pioneer of the boutique fitness scene and one of its most recognized brands.

After steady growth during its first decade, Barry’s opened its first international location in Norway in 2011, followed by London two years later. There are currently seven locations in London, with one location each in Manchester and Liverpool.

The famous ‘red room’ has since expanded to over 70 locations across the globe in 14 countries including Singapore, Australia, UAE, Qatar, as well as other regions in Europe.

The company is now headed by former Barry’s instructor Joey Gonzalez, who is overseeing their further expansion with a mix of franchise and corporate-owned locations.

What Our Evaluator Had To Say

“I loved how striking the Red Room felt the moment I stepped inside. It instantly shifted the energy.”

“The workout was fun and fast-paced, but I would have appreciated a bit more personal attention as a first timer.”

“The whole place looked immaculate; it really felt like a premium fitness environment.”

What to Expect From A Barry's Orchard Session

Try a session in the famous ‘red room’ and you’ll see it’s so much more than treadmill running and weights. The red light, the pumping music, and the strong presence of the instructors all come together to create one of the most memorable experiences in fitness.

Offering both 50 and 60-minute sessions, a typical Barry’s class involves coach-led treadmill running alternating with dumbbell and bodyweight strength work on “the floor”.

Each day’s strength work has a different focus, with some days serving up ‘Full Body’ strength and others focusing on specific areas such as ‘Chest, Back and Abs’ and ‘Abs and Ass’. For those that prefer strength work, Barry’s offers the ‘double floor’ option, which skips the treadmill and doubles up on the weights.

The Reception Service

The arrival experience at Barry’s Orchard was lively, confident and unmistakably 'Barry’s'. We were greeted promptly and given an orientation that covered the essentials, though it moved a little quickly for first-timers trying to take everything in. Even so, the welcome felt warm and well organised, and it was clear the team was comfortable with the flow of arrivals.

Registration was handled efficiently and completed within minutes before we were shown where to wait. After class, package information was shared clearly once we asked, but the conversation needed a nudge to get started and did not build toward a confident close. The friendliness was there, though the sales energy felt a touch muted.

By the time we left, the overall tone was positive, with smiles and encouragement that made us feel welcome and open to returning.

The Class Experience

The class at Barry's Orchard has received our Recommended Rating.

Our time in 'The Red Room' delivered the signature Barry’s vibe, with high energy, strong music and a workout that ramps up intensity quickly. The induction before class was clear and useful, particularly for first-timers getting familiar with Barry’s terminology and flow. Once the session started, though, the delivery stayed fairly general. Names were not used, individual encouragement was limited and beginners were not given extra support to help them settle in with confidence.

The programming itself was enjoyable but could have benefited from more flexibility in weight selection, especially during floor blocks where a single dumbbell did not always suit the range of movements. That said, the pacing, music and overall flow were on point, and the cooldown brought the session to a solid close.

While personalisation and hands-on coaching were lighter than expected, the atmosphere, music and momentum of the Red Room kept the workout engaging and satisfying overall.

The Equipment And Studio

Barry’s Orchard delivered a strong environment. From the Woodway treadmills to the dumbbells and resistance bands, everything looked clean, sharp and fully branded. The red lighting, modern finishes and overall layout created the familiar Barry’s feel, with well-spaced, high-quality equipment that comfortably supported a full class.

The floors, walls and ceilings were spotless, and the sound system was clear and powerful, making transitions easy to follow. With consistent branding, solid production quality and a high-energy atmosphere, the space felt polished, focused and well suited to the Barry’s format.

The Facilities And Public Areas

Throughout the studio, Barry’s Orchard presented a clean, well-organised and clearly branded environment. Arrival was easy to spot thanks to strong exterior signage and a large logo at the entrance. Inside, the space felt orderly and professional, with consistent branding across furniture, retail displays and shared areas. Navigation was straightforward and the club maintained a calm, polished feel despite the scale of the operation.

The changing rooms were bright and well maintained, with free workout and shower towels, steady water pressure and branded personal-care products. Showers and grooming areas were in good condition, and the vertical lighting added a subtle design detail without feeling overdone. The Fuel Bar was clean and ready for post-workout smoothies, though food options were limited.

Overall, the public areas felt functional, well looked after and very much in line with the Barry’s brand, supporting a smooth and comfortable visit.

Digital And Technology

Booking a class at Barry’s Orchard was straightforward, with both the website and app making it easy to find sessions, manage bookings and receive confirmations quickly. Class details, coach information and brand context were all clearly laid out online. The confirmation emails did the job but felt fairly plain, missing some of the visual punch and personality Barry’s is known for.

Social media captured the Red Room atmosphere well through strong imagery and video, though posting felt infrequent and not always current. Beyond booking and the branded app, there was little in the way of added in-studio technology, with no digital features used to enhance the workout itself.
