The The Class Story

In creating The Class, founder Taryn Toomey took inspiration from overcoming struggles in her life to develop a unique fitness concept that could positively impact others, combining both mindfulness and movement to create a non-judgmental environment and community.

Taryn started teaching her practice in 2011 and “The Class” as a concept was born in 2013. The first studio space launched in Tribeca in 2017 and, with a desire to impact more people, The Class launched online sessions in 2019. Today, The Class also has a studio in Santa Monica, Los Angeles.

Elements of mindfulness have been infused into the workout which, when coupled with a strong community vibe, have created something quite unique and special.

The studio's social media presence was also notable, providing lots of information regarding the types of classes.

What Our Evaluator Had To Say

“I received a very genuine and warm welcome from the team on arrival.”

“The class was an interesting mix of mindfulness and movement.”

“The space had some real interesting elements, such as candles, a distinctive scent, and hanging crystal lights.”

What To Expect From A The Class Session

The Class’ signature workout blends rhythmic breathing, calisthenics and plyometrics, offering an experience that “creates an entirely new feeling in the mind and body”. On-demand classes are also available, with a select few of their studio classes each week being live streamed on their digital platform.

Classes are usually 60 minutes long, with some “express” 45-minute classes on the schedule. Expect a unique workout experience designed to stimulate all of your senses and challenge your body and mind.

The Reception Service

We enjoyed the chat during our pre-visit call, which was full of energy and excited us for our visit.  Enthusiasm and professionalism during the discussion about the class structure and packages made us feel informed and excited for their visit.

This warmth was extended to our arrival. The receptionist was welcoming and promptly completed the registration process. A clear orientation was offered, including a verbal tour of the studio and amenities, which ensured we felt prepared and comfortable navigating the space. The receptionist showed genuine interest by asking our evaluator if it was their first time and providing thoughtful anticipatory service, such as explaining footwear options for the class.

Following the class, the departure experience felt transactional. There was no inquiry about our experience or encouragement to return. While the receptionist was knowledgeable and comfortable discussing package options, there was no proactive effort to understand our evaluator's needs. Overall though, we had a good impression of the reception service.

The Class Experience

The Class received our Recommended rating for the Class Experience.

The class offered a unique blend of mindfulness and movement, with an energetic and enthusiastic instructor who clearly enjoyed leading the session. The upbeat music and positive atmosphere made the workout engaging and fun, leaving a favorable impression. Efforts to foster a sense of community, such as encouraging participants to introduce themselves and addressing everyone as "friends," added a warm and welcoming touch.

Individual connection with clients, particularly first-timers, was somewhat lacking. Injury checks were not conducted, and the instructor did not offer personalized guidance or adjustments to form. While regressions and progressions were provided, the absence of one-on-one engagement could leave beginners feeling unsupported. Additionally, the class ended eight minutes late, which some participants may find inconvenient.

Overall, the session was enjoyable, with a high-energy delivery and well-structured flow.

The Equipment And Studio

The studio was thoughtfully designed, offering a clean and branded environment with high-quality equipment, although some wear was noticeable, such as scratches on the mats and peeling logos. The branded mats and ambient elements, including candles, a distinctive scent, and hanging crystal lights, effectively enhanced the sense of brand and contributed to the atmosphere. The lighting and high-quality sound system added to the overall experience, creating a comfortable and immersive setting.

The mats were placed quite close together, which limited personal space and caused disruptions, and our evaluator was accidentally hit by another participant during one of the moves.

While the space provided a satisfying workout setting, we would have appreciated a bit more space.

The Facilities And Public Areas

The public areas were beautifully designed with high-quality materials, including wood floors, marble counters, and gold fixtures, contributing to an upscale aesthetic. Soft lighting, natural elements like plants, and abstract landscape photographs enhanced the atmosphere, and the unique color palette reinforced the studio's branding. Branding was further reflected in the light fixture, which subtly echoed the studio's logo.

Lockers with numerical locks were provided and conveniently sized, although they lacked hangers. Complimentary workout towels were available. A complimentary water refill station was provided, but there were no food options or flavored or electrolyte beverages available.

The studio lacked shower facilities, and the changing area, while nicely designed with marble countertops and hexagonal tiles, was small and featured only one narrow bench, which would limit comfort during peak times. Amenities were plentiful and included hand wash, face cleanser, lotion, and toner.

Overall, while the studio's design and branding elements created a polished and inviting environment, the absence of showers and limited space in the changing area detracted from the overall convenience and functionality of the facilities.

Digital And Technology

The digital experience provided by The Class was really positive, with a user-friendly website that made booking our class and finding relevant information seamless. Detailed descriptions of class types and coach bios gave the client a clear understanding of what to expect. Social media channels were consistent with the brand's aesthetics and values, offering valuable information and allowing direct class bookings via the Linktree in the Instagram bio.

The emails following bookings were clear and professional, including branding elements such as the logo.

Overall, the seamless booking process, informative website, and strong social media presence left us with a positive impression.
