The Physique 57 Story

Physique 57 was founded in 2006 by Jennifer Vaughan Maanavi and Tanya Becker. The first Physique 57 studio was opened in New York City in the heart of the fashion district on West 57th Street. The founders created the method by combining their backgrounds in dance, Pilates, and physical therapy to create a workout that focused on strengthening and lengthening the body. The popularity of their classes quickly grew, and the company expanded to additional locations in New York City and Los Angeles before branching out internationally.

They now have a presence in four countries: India, Thailand, the UAE, and its primary market, the United States. As the industry recovers, they are looking at further expansion into other markets. Notably, Physique 57 offers a robust "video on demand" feature, enabling clients to participate in the tight-knit community and experience their premium barre workout from anywhere.

The Highlights

The class experience was one of the very best we experienced in New York. It was delivered by an enthusiastic and professional instructor who methodically, but very personably, led a true five-star experience befitting of its award and recognition.

Another highlight was the training space; the sense of brand was enhanced with the brand colors, blue lights and other accents.

What Our Evaluator Had To Say

“Our class was a fantastic, almost flawless experience from start to finish.”

“The instructor spoke to me before the class, really getting to know me and my training history before we started.”

“The instructor was very enthusiastic and clearly enjoyed teaching. This energy was infectious!”

What To Expect From A Physique 57 Session

A typical Physique 57 session is a full body workout that is 57-minutes long and offers their signature approach to barre. Their classes are high intensity, low impact and can be adjusted to all ability levels by an experienced and well-trained instructor team.

Some of their movements will use just your body weight, whereas others use training tools such as light dumbbells or soft balls that are used to strengthen and build muscle. One of their trademark techniques is to “pulse” small movements repeatedly to target small, often underused muscle groups.

Class types include Sculpt for beginners, Power Sculpt for intermediate practitioners or Power Sculpt Lab for a more advanced challenge. They also have a range of online classes available.

The Reception Service

The phone line was not answered when we tried to call the studio a few times.

Upon arrival, we were greeted promptly, and the receptionist gave us a tour, pointing out key areas like the locker rooms and water stations. They showed genuine interest by asking about our experience with barre and offering thoughtful details, such as where to refill water bottles.

During departure, the receptionist remained polite and professional, explaining package options and suggesting a trial for new clients without any pressure. While the interaction was informative, a more proactive effort to ask about our class experience or encourage a return visit would have added a more personal touch.

The Class Experience

Physique 57 Soho has achieved The Fit Guide 5-Star Class Experience Award for an exceptional class, putting it amongst the very best in New York and industry.

The experience was filled with thoughtful touches, from a warm pre-class connection from the instructor to a follow-up after our first session. As newcomers, we received a little extra attention that made us feel comfortable and supported.

The class itself was close to flawless. Our coach brought enthusiasm, professionalism, and a keen eye for every participant, ensuring we felt welcomed and prepared. Injury checks, clear explanations, and structured pacing made the workout flow seamlessly, with modifications available for all fitness levels. The upbeat music, well-timed cues, and motivating atmosphere kept us engaged from start to finish. Post-class, the coach checked in with participants, especially first-timers. Details like a tracking board for class attendance and wristbands for fitness goals added a unique and personal touch and the community vibe was clear to see.

Overall, this class stood out as a highly enjoyable and professional experience that left a lasting positive impression. It was, in summary, one of the most well-delivered class experiences in New York and every bit deserving of its 5-Star Class Experience award.

The Facilities And Public Areas

The reception area felt welcoming, with sleek furniture, a boutique, and a strong presence of the studio’s signature color. Branding was cohesive, and the mix of upbeat music and natural light created an energetic yet relaxed vibe.

The changing rooms were well-equipped with amenities like deodorant, dry shampoo, lotion, and feminine products.
