The New York Pilates Story

As Heather Anderson wound up her career as a dancer, the injuries she had sustained led her to the practice of Pilates. Heather was hooked, and quickly became an instructor before saving enough money to open her own studio. That studio was New York Pilates (“NYP”) and after their first opening they now boast seven locations throughout New York, Long Island and the Hamptons.

How Did New York Pilates Score Overall?

The full client experience at New York Pilates West Village was good, achieving our Recommended rating.

The class experience was enjoyable and also achieved our Recommended rating.

The Highlights

The main highlight was our instructor, who was friendly and competent.

The quality of the reformers was also notable.

What Our Evaluator Had To Say

“The instructor greeted everyone individually at the beginning of class, which was a nice start to the session.”

“The instructions on form and technique from the instructor were easy to follow.”

“The studio was nicely designed, and the reformers were high quality, which was a plus for me.”

What To Expect From A New York Pilates Session

New York Pilate’s signature class is their Abs Arms Ass session, a high intensity 45-minute session founded by their master trainer, Heather Anderson. Using Pilates reformers, they describe their class as an “immersive mind-body experience” guided by supportive, experienced instructors that are trained to adapt the class to all levels.

The Reception Service

When attempting to call the club, we received a recorded message indicating it was “phone-free”.

Upon arrival, the reception staff greeted our evaluator promptly and efficiently facilitated the check-in process. Registration was straightforward, though the lack of a reception desk and the standing check-in at the entrance detracted slightly from the overall comfort. While the receptionist provided basic orientation by pointing out facilities such as restrooms and changing rooms, there was no effort to direct us to a waiting area or enhance the experience through proactive engagement or personalized attention.

After the class, there was no follow-up to inquire whether we had enjoyed the experience or invite us back, which left the interaction feeling perfunctory.

The Class Experience

New York Pilates West Village received our Recommended rating for the Class Experience.

The class was led competently by our instructor, who provided clear instructions and maintained a professional demeanor throughout. Her warm greeting of all clients created a welcoming atmosphere, and the session flowed smoothly with a well-structured format. Modifications for exercises were thoughtfully provided, making the class accessible to participants of different levels. The cooldown segment effectively brought the session to a close with a calming stretch and relaxation routine.

The class was enjoyable but there was somewhat of a lack of personalization and limited individual engagement beyond initial greetings. An injury check or induction for first-timers, especially when requested, would have been appreciated. Additionally, the coach did not follow up with us after class.

The Equipment And Studio

The studio was nicely designed, and the high-quality reformers provided a solid foundation for the session. The dim lighting with purple accents added to the atmosphere and reflected the brand’s identity.

Equipment was well-spaced and allowed for comfortable movement, however, there were a few cleanliness and condition issues noted. The studio lacked visible branding elements beyond the purple lighting.

The Facilities And Public Areas

The studio's public areas were thoughtfully designed, with industrial-style elements like large arched windows, wood floors, and tin ceilings creating a clean, inviting atmosphere. Natural light and live plants enhanced the aesthetic. Branding was subtle but present through purple studio lights and a boutique with branded merchandise.

While amenities such as hand wash, deodorant, and mineral facial mist were appreciated, the lack of showers, lockers, and proper workout towels detracted from the overall experience. Instead of a full towel, the client was offered a washcloth. Cubbies replaced lockers, and no food or beverage options were available aside from complimentary water.

Digital And Technology

The online booking process was efficient and user-friendly, with clear navigation and a seamless reservation experience. However, the website lacked detailed information regarding class types, coach bios, and the brand's values or mission. While the website design was professional and aligns visually with the brand, the minimal and purely informative copy. Directions to the club were limited to an address without further guidance.

Email communications included a brand logo but lacked additional elements or personalized touches to strongly represent the brand identity. Social media pages featured high-quality content but were inconsistently updated, with weeks passing between posts. Posts also lacked clear and actionable links, and one offer link led to an expired promotion, which detracted from the overall experience.

While the club uses the MindBody platform and has a branded app, no additional in-class technology was offered to enhance the client experience. On-demand classes were available.

Pricing

New York Pilates offers an intro deal of three classes for $96 or a 1-week unlimited offer for $99.

If you’re looking for a longer-term commitment, memberships are available from $160 for five classes per month up to $360 for 30 classes.
