The Bodyrok Story

Bodyrok was founded by Jake and Tina Irion and Philip Palumbo in 2012. Since their first California location, they’ve since expanded across the US with 24 locations with further expansion plans through a franchise model.

Bodyrok call their workout ‘pilates redefined’, with custom-built reformers offering a session that is fun, effective, and accessible to all. Co-founder Jake Irion says they provide a machine, brand, and experience that is “luxurious and strong”.

The class experience was positive and also achieved our Recommended rating.

The Highlights

The highlight of our visit was the comprehensive and clear class that started with a strong induction.

Another standout was the studio itself, which was nicely designed and equipped with high-quality reformers.

What Our Evaluator Had To Say

“Our instructor was knowledgeable and competently led the class.”

“As there were a few newcomers in the class, a full, well-delivered induction was given.”

“I really like the studio as it had a great design and aesthetic to it.”

What To Expect From A Bodyrok Session

Bodyrok promises to offer you more in their 45-minute Pilates reformer sessions than you would typically get in a 60-minute session, with a workout that sculpts and defines your body. The Bodyrok Reformer is custom-built and exclusive to their studios, offering unique and innovative features such as a jump board, removable shoulder rests, ropes and bungees - all made in the USA.

Bodyrok offers a single class called SCULPT, that provides a sequence of “Hybrid Pilates Movements” designed to push you past your comfort zone and target every muscle group. Expect to plank, lunge, pike and twist through the session, with encouraging and qualified instructors to guide you.

The Reception Service

The club does not list a phone number online, so it was not possible to call to make inquiries prior to the visit.

At the studio, reception services were polite and efficient. The receptionist greeted our evaluator promptly, completed registration quickly, and provided a clear orientation, pointing out key areas like the locker rooms and water refill station. Thoughtful advice was offered, such as suggesting a central reformer placement for better access to the coach. However, there was no effort to personalize interactions or proactively recommend next steps for training.

After the class, there was no follow-up from staff to inquire about our experience or make us feel welcomed back. When prompted, however, package options were explained clearly and comfortably. Overall, the reception services were good but lacked warmth and personalization.

The Class Experience

Bodyrok Soho received our Recommended rating for the Class Experience.

The class provided a well-structured Pilates session, led by a knowledgeable coach who confidently guided us through the reformer workout. The induction at the beginning was clear and helpful, particularly for newcomers, ensuring everyone felt prepared to start. The class flowed smoothly, with the coach offering modifications to accommodate varying levels of experience and fitness, creating an inclusive environment.

While the session was positive overall, there were missed opportunities for personalization and connection, particularly with first-time clients. The coach focused primarily on delivering the workout, engaging briefly with regular clients but not extending the same to all participants. This left our evaluator feeling slightly overlooked. Additionally, while the class had a friendly atmosphere, the lack of individual encouragement and post-class follow-up diminished the overall sense of community and care.

Despite these grumbles, the session was effective and enjoyable, with clear instructions, well-paced transitions, and a structured cooldown.

The Equipment And Studio

The studio was nicely designed, with high-quality reformer machines featuring the studio’s name on the front. Equipment was clean, well-maintained, and conveniently arranged, although our evaluator's machine had a ripped hand grip, which slightly detracted from the experience.

The training area was well-lit with overhead blue and red lighting, adding energy and vibrancy to the space. While the overall atmosphere was pleasant,a few maintenance issues were noted, along with a lack of additional branding elements.

The sound system was high quality and contributed to a positive workout atmosphere, rounding out an impressive experience.

The Facilities And Public Areas

The studio offered a minimalistic experience, with public areas lacking key amenities like showers, workout towels, or additional facilities. The single restroom created wait times, which was a bit inconvenient, and the overall ambiance felt sparse. While the industrial design with exposed pipes and wood floors added a modern touch, it lacked sensory elements or notable features to make the space feel elevated.

Lockers with key locks were available, though some were not in great condition. Complimentary water refill stations were appreciated. Food options and workout were not available.

The changing areas were functional but cramped, with no benches, and the amenity selection was limited to basic hand wash. Although the locker room was clean and well-lit, with some branding elements like gold stars on the walls, it lacked the polish and thoughtful features expected from a premium facility.

Digital And Technology

The club’s online booking system and branded app made reservations smooth and straightforward, providing timely confirmation and clear cancellation policies. However, the lack of a class schedule and coach bios on the website was noted. Social media channels were regularly updated and visually aligned with the brand.

The website was mobile-friendly, intuitive, and consistent with the brand, featuring clear navigation and motivational copy that aligned with the club’s target demographic. Calls-to-action like "Book a Class" encouraged engagement, but the absence of key details, such as a class schedule, detracted from the overall user experience. Automatic emails reflected the brand’s identity through design elements like the studio name in gold, though they lacked stronger branding features.

The club utilized the Mindbody booking platform and a branded app, along with digital on-demand classes. While the technology supported booking effectively, it did not extend to enhancing the in-class experience.
