How Did Barry’s UWS Score Overall?
The full client experience at Barry’s UWS was very good, achieving The Fit Guide Award of Excellence.
The class was also excellent, winning our Class Experience Award of Excellence.
The Highlights
The highlight of our visit was the class experience, due to the energetic and enthusiastic coach.
The studio itself was also a standout, offering everything that Barry’s is known for: the lights and sound in the famous 'Red Room'.
What Our Evaluator Had To Say
“Our coach was incredibly enthusiastic and knowledgeable and kept things moving along smoothly.”
“I can see how consistently attending Barry’s would yield great results. I would return.”
“The whole club felt unified in design, style, and energy.”
What To Expect From A Barry’s Session
Try a session in the famous ‘red room’ and you’ll see it’s so much more than treadmill running and weights. The red light, the pumping music, and the strong presence of the instructors all come together to create one of the most memorable experiences in fitness.
Offering both 50 and 60-minute sessions, a typical Barry’s class involves coach-led treadmill running alternating with dumbbell and bodyweight strength work on “the floor”.
Each day’s strength work has a different focus, with some days serving up ‘Full Body’ strength and others focusing on specific areas such as ‘Chest, Back and Abs’ and ‘Abs and Ass’. For those that prefer strength work, Barry’s offers the ‘double floor’ option, which skips the treadmill and doubles up on the weights.

The Reception Service
The phone call to the club was well-handled, with the receptionist providing clear, informative details about the club's amenities, class options, and offerings. The tone was enthusiastic and professional, leaving us feeling excited about the visit.
At the studio, the reception staff were welcoming and efficient, completing the registration process quickly and offering an unprompted orientation to the space. Directions to the locker rooms and class location were clear, ensuring we felt prepared.
After class, the staff were friendly and engaged, showing genuine interest by asking about our experience and how we felt about the run. Package options were presented knowledgeably and comfortably, with staff mentioning upcoming offers for first-time visitors.
The Class Experience
Barry’s Upper West Side received The Fit Guide Class Experience Award of Excellence, making it one of New York's stand-out offerings.
The class provided an effective workout with a strong structure and great energy. The coach brought enthusiasm and clear expertise to the session.
We were given precise instructions and offered appropriate progressions and regressions for regulars, ensuring an inclusive environment for more advanced clients. While the group as a whole benefited from a lively atmosphere, the session could have been improved with a little more intentional effort to connect with and accommodate first-timers.
The energy in the room was undeniable, fueled by an upbeat playlist and the camaraderie of regulars. The structured cooldown provided a smooth and satisfying conclusion to the session, and the coach’s enthusiasm shone through, leaving a positive overall impression.

The Equipment And Studio
The training room had a high-end feel, with premium equipment and a strong sense of brand throughout. Cardio machines from Woodway, branded treadmills, towels, mats, and benches all reinforced the club’s identity and elevated the overall experience.
The space was well-lit with signature red lighting, creating a cohesive and branded atmosphere, often referred to as the "red room." Equipment was arranged conveniently, fully stocked, and suited to a range of abilities, ensuring a smooth and effective workout.
While the equipment and overall condition of the room were top-notch, a bit of dust and debris on the floor was noticeable during floor exercises, slightly detracting from the otherwise polished environment. Despite this, the high-quality sound system and slick design made for an impressive overall experience.
The Facilities And Public Areas
The club's commitment to design and seamless client experience was evident, creating a unified and engaging atmosphere. The incorporation of local aesthetic elements, such as subway tiles and brownstone-inspired accents, effectively tied the club’s branding to its neighborhood. Amenities like the smoothie bar, branded workout towels, and attentive staff at the fuel bar further elevated the experience. Lockers were available, equipped with number locks.
Free water refill stations were conveniently provided, while paid beverage options, including bottled water and energy drinks, added variety. However, the changing area lacked sufficient space and seating, and the limited number of showers led to a significant wait time.
Free and paid beverage options were offered, but no food options were available.
Digital And Technology
The club’s online booking system and dedicated app were functional and user-friendly, providing clear confirmation emails and cancellation policies. Social media offered helpful brand representation.
The website was professional, mobile-friendly, and aligned with the brand’s identity. It provided clear class descriptions, instructor bios, and motivational copy. While the site contained a blog, it was not consistently updated.
The club used a branded app and a comprehensive booking platform for in-person classes, alongside on-demand classes through Barry’s X. However, no additional technology was incorporated to enhance the in-class experience.
