The Barry's Story

Barry’s proudly proclaims their cardio and strength hybrid training to be the ‘best workout in the world’, and have built a large and loyal global following.

Founded in 1998 in Los Angeles by Barry Jay, Barry’s became a pioneer of the boutique fitness scene and one of its most recognized brands.

After steady growth during its first decade, Barry’s opened its first international location in Norway in 2011, followed by London two years later. There are now currently seven locations in London, with single locations in both Manchester and Liverpool.

The famous ‘red room’ has since expanded to over 70 locations across the globe in 14 countries including Singapore, Australia, UAE, Qatar, as well as other regions in Europe.

The company is now headed by former Barry’s instructor Joey Gonzalez, who is overseeing their further expansion with a mix of franchise and corporate-owned locations.

How Did Barry’s UWS Score Overall?

The full client experience at Barry’s UWS was very good, achieving our Fit Guide 4-star award.

The class was also excellent, winning our 4-Star Class Experience Award.

The Highlights

Our class experience offered everything that Barry’s is known for - the lights, the sound, and the energetic and enthusiastic coach.

What Our Evaluator Had To Say

“The coach was incredibly enthusiastic and knowledgeable and kept things moving along smoothly.”

“I can see how consistently attending Barry’s would yield great results.”

“The whole club felt unified in design, style, and energy.”

What To Expect From A Barry’s Session

Try a session in the famous ‘red room’ and you’ll see it’s so much more than treadmill running and weights. The red light, the pumping music, and the strong presence of the instructors all come together to create one of the most memorable experiences in fitness.

Offering both 50 and 60-minute sessions, a typical Barry’s class involves coach-led treadmill running alternating with dumbbell and bodyweight strength work on “the floor”.

Each day’s strength work has a different focus, with some days serving up ‘Full Body’ strength and others focusing on specific areas such as ‘Chest, Back and Abs’ and ‘Abs and Ass’. For those that prefer strength work, Barry’s offers the ‘double floor’ option, which skips the treadmill and doubles up on the weights.

The Reception Service

During our pre-visit call, the reception staff did a good job of answering our queries and getting us excited about the visit. The arrival and departure process and interactions were also strong. Asking us more questions would have helped improve the service, especially when we were enquiring about the packages.

The Class Experience

Barry’s Upper West Side received The Fit Guide 4-Star Class Experience Award, making it one of New York's stand-out offerings.

Our evaluators found the coach’s energy to be infectious and motivating. She did a great job of working the room, helping on form and connecting with as many people as she could. Whilst it was a little difficult to follow at times, it was clear to see why the workout has become so popular.

The Equipment And Studio

As you would expect from Barry’s, the equipment and studio were clean, in great condition, and of the highest quality.

The Facilities And Public Areas

The public areas were all impressive, and clean with many great design and branding features throughout. With two showers available, we had to wait around 15 minutes.

Workout and shower towels were provided free of charge. Lockers were provided with number locks. Free water refill stations were available.

Digital And Technology

Barry’s has a strong online presence through both their website and their social media channels with a booking process that is smooth and efficient. There was no prominent fitness technology used during the workout.
