The Barry's Story

Barry’s proudly proclaims their cardio and strength hybrid training to be the ‘best workout in the world’, and have built a large and loyal global following. 

Founded in 1998 in Los Angeles by Barry Jay, Barry’s became a pioneer of the boutique fitness scene and one of its most recognized brands.

After steady growth during its first decade, Barry’s opened its first international location in Norway in 2011, followed by London two years later. There are currently seven locations in London, with one location each in Manchester and Liverpool.

The famous ‘red room’ has since expanded to over 90 locations across the globe in 15 countries including Singapore, Australia, UAE, Qatar, as well as other regions in Europe.

The company is now headed by former Barry’s instructor Joey Gonzalez, who is overseeing their further expansion with a mix of franchise and corporate-owned locations.

What to Expect From A Barry's South Yarra Session

Expect a high-intensity combination of treadmill intervals and strength training designed to challenge every muscle group. Barry’s Miami Beach delivers its famous mix of “run and lift” formats in a sleek, dimly lit Red Room powered by motivating playlists and expert coaching. Each day of the week targets a different muscle focus from Upper Body, Lower Body, Full Body, Core, or Total Body, so you can balance your training across sessions. With a premium locker room setup, a lively Fuel Bar for post-class smoothies, and a seamless booking experience through the Barry’s app, it’s everything you’d expect from one of the world’s most iconic fitness brands.

The Reception Service

The reception service in the studio was smooth, confident, and easy to navigate. As first timers, we were greeted promptly, acknowledged straight away, and guided through registration without any delay. A clear orientation was provided without us needing to ask, covering lockers, towels, the complimentary shake for new visitors, and what to expect in class. We were also shown where to wait, which helped everything feel calm and organised before the session began.

Pre-visit phone calls went unanswered. In person, however, the team delivered a warm and professional experience. Post-class, we were checked in with and given clear explanations around packages and promotions. The tone was overall welcoming and confident.

The Class Experience

Barry's South Yarra received our Class Experience Award of Excellence.

The class was structured, high energy, and professionally run. Instructions were clear, timing cues were well managed, and the music supported the intensity of the workout. The warm-up set the pace effectively, and the session flowed smoothly between treadmill and floor work. Progressions and regressions were explained clearly, so we could adjust the intensity to suit our level.

Encouragement was consistent, and the coach maintained a strong presence throughout. The cooldown was delivered clearly, and the class wrapped up on a positive note. There were limited individual form corrections and the class ran slightly over time. Even so, the overall experience felt polished, motivating, and well executed.

The Equipment And Studio

The studio delivered a premium training environment. Strength and cardio equipment were clean, professional grade, and in excellent condition. Layout and spacing were well considered, allowing smooth transitions between exercises and ensuring there was enough equipment for everyone in the room.

The signature red lighting created a strong visual impact and reinforced the brand identity immediately. Dark flooring, long rows of treadmills, and intentional lighting design combined to create a focused and immersive setting. Temperature, cleanliness, and sound quality were all strong, contributing to a high-energy atmosphere that felt purpose-built for performance.

The Facilities And Public Areas

Public areas made a confident first impression, with bold signage and strong brand identity visible throughout. The space felt fresh, organised, and professional, with consistent branding carried from entry to reception. Navigation was straightforward, and overall presentation supported the premium positioning of the studio.

Changing rooms and wet areas were a clear strength. Facilities were clean, well maintained, and generously stocked with towels and amenities. Lockers were secure and conveniently located. Shower areas offered strong water pressure and consistent temperatures. The smoothie bar added value to the overall visit and operated efficiently, though food and beverage options beyond smoothies and water were limited. Seating in the waiting area was minimal, which could feel tight at peak times, but the space remained clean and easy to move through.

Digital And Technology

The booking journey was seamless and intuitive across both website and app. We could purchase sessions, manage bookings, and view cancellation terms easily. Confirmation emails were prompt and clearly outlined arrival expectations, including early arrival for induction, which helped us feel prepared ahead of the session.

The website was professional, mobile-friendly, and visually aligned with the Barry’s brand. Class types, schedules, coach bios, and booking instructions were easy to find, and automated emails reflected the same bold, high-energy tone seen in the studio. Social media channels were active and consistent with the in-club experience.

Barry's South Yarra offers an introductory deal for first-time clients. Newcomers can pay $59 and enjoy 3 classes.
