The BLOK Story

BLOK was founded in 2016 by Ed Stanbury, Reema Stanbury and Max Oppenheim. Their first location was an old Victorian tram depot in Clapton, London, which was in a state of disrepair. Seeing an opportunity to create something special in a unique space, Ed Stanbury launched a gym that combined a range of concepts such as boxing, HIIT and yoga with striking, unique features such as art, sculptures and a bone broth bar.

BLOK now has three locations, with Shoreditch and Manchester now on the map, as well as an extensive digital platform, BLOKtv.

What To Expect From A BLOK Session

BLOK offers a diverse range of yoga classes, with seven different practices that have taken traditional yoga and given it a modern, dynamic twist. Class options include the creative and energetic Dynamic Vinyasa; Power Yoga, which focuses on strength and core, and Yoga With Meditation.

The Reception Service

It wasn’t possible to get through to the club by phone. On arrival, we were greeted within a minute, but there was no acknowledgment that it was our first visit, and when we looked a little unsure of where to go, the guidance was minimal.

Registration was prompt, but there was little effort to make the experience feel personal or warm. We weren’t shown around or told where to wait, and it took us asking directly to learn where the changing rooms were. While a shower towel was provided free of charge as a gesture, the overall tone from reception felt curt rather than friendly, with no attempt to engage.

On departure, there was no meaningful effort to help us continue training with the studio. Overall, the interaction felt more like a quick transaction than a welcoming reception experience.

The Class Experience

The class at BLOK Shoreditch was a calming and restorative experience. Our instructor brought a warm, welcoming energy into the room, creating a peaceful atmosphere. Their clear instructions, gentle encouragement and steady pacing helped the session flow well, striking just a nice balance between focus and relaxation.

The music complemented the tone of the class perfectly, and there were some nice extra touches, such as the soft chime sound used during cooldown.

There were moments where the experience could have felt more personal. First-timers weren’t given additional guidance or one-on-one attention, and names weren’t used during the session. Despite these areas for improvement, the class itself was grounded and attentive.

The Equipment And Studio

The studio at BLOK Shoreditch offered a fresh and calm environment. Its minimalist design—featuring wooden floors, black and white finishes, and neatly arranged shelving—gave the space a polished yet understated aesthetic. While some background music from other parts of the club could be heard, the studio itself felt peaceful and quiet once the door was closed.

All of the equipment used during the session was spotless, high quality, and in excellent condition. The yoga blocks from Ekotex felt sturdy and reliable, and there were enough for everyone.

Though the room lacked distinctive branding or standout design, it was a comfortable and professional space to practice in.

The Facilities And Public Areas

The public areas at BLOK Shoreditch had a clean and orderly feel, with a minimalist industrial design of concrete and steel finishes that gave the club a modern, polished edge. Branding around the entrance impressed us, with a bold steel reception desk and signage.

The changing and grooming areas were neatly presented, stocked with useful amenities like deodorant, cotton pads, and moisturiser, and showers were plentiful. There were a few small cleanliness issues noted. The Lockers were convenient but a little worn. Shower towels were available for a £1 rental fee, though workout towels weren’t provided.

There wasn’t much of a waiting area or seating, and the space felt a bit light on sensory elements, but the overall atmosphere was functional. A highlight was the well-stocked coffee and smoothie bar, alongside complimentary water and a range of paid drinks and snacks, which added a nice touch.

Digital And Technology

Booking a class at BLOK Shoreditch was a straightforward process, with the website and app offering a clean, stylish interface that reflected the brand’s “fitness meets design” ethos. The site was mobile-friendly and aligned with the brand’s editorial aesthetic, with class descriptions and schedules easy to navigate. We would have appreciated more detail about the instructors' teaching styles, and there was no mention of when to arrive or what first-timers should expect.

The club’s emails were branded and personalized, though they could have carried more of BLOK’s personality. Their Instagram game was strong, posting multiple times a week with moody, design-led imagery that stayed true to the brand’s identity.
