The BLOK Story

BLOK was founded in 2016 by Ed Stanbury, Reema Stanbury and Max Oppenheim. Their first location was an old Victorian tram depot in Clapton, London, which was in a state of disrepair. Seeing an opportunity to create something special in a unique space, Ed Stanbury launched a gym that combined a range of concepts such as boxing, HIIT and yoga with striking, unique features such as art, sculptures and a bone broth bar.

BLOK now has three locations, with Shoreditch and Manchester now on the map, as well as an extensive digital platform, BLOKtv.

The class was a real highlight, with our coach leading an engaging and well-paced session

The studio space was a big stand-out, with interesting design features and elements.

What Our Evaluator Had To Say

The lighting, music, and the coach’s approach made the class an enjoyable experience.

The studio was a great space and the lighting and design added to the experience. The equipment was also of high quality.”

“I loved the coffee bar. It really helped create a great atmosphere in the space.”

What To Expect From A BLOK Yoga Session

BLOK offers a diverse range of yoga classes, with seven different practices that have taken traditional yoga and given it a modern, dynamic twist. Class options include the creative and energetic Dynamic Vinyasa; Power Yoga, which focuses on strength and core, and Yoga With Meditation.

The Reception Service

The reception experience had some positives but was a little lackluster. Our phone call was handled politely and calmly, with the basics covered, but it didn’t fully capture the energy or warmth of the brand and could have done more to build excitement for our visit.

At the studio, check-in was quick and friendly; however, there wasn’t much extra effort to guide us as a first-timer, and we had to take the lead with most questions. A little more orientation and conversation would have made the welcome feel more personal.

When we asked about memberships on departure, the team member present was juggling several tasks, which meant the chat about options felt a bit rushed. Still, they stayed polite and non-pushy.

The Class Experience

BLOK Clapton received our Recommended rating for the Class Experience.

The class was a real highlight, with the coach leading an engaging and well-paced session that felt uplifting from start to finish. The calm tone, clear instructions, and a thoughtful mix of music and lighting created a great flow that made the hour fly by.

Demonstrations and explanations were clear and confident, giving reassurance that we were in good hands, with regressions and progressions offered so everyone could find the right level. The vibe in the room was warm and positive, and the energy helped keep the class enjoyable without feeling pressured.

There wasn’t much time to connect with the coach before or after the session because of the quick turnaround between classes, and a little more individual attention for first-timers would have been welcome. Still, the overall experience was smooth, fun and memorable – the kind of class that leaves you feeling refreshed and wanting to return.

The Equipment And Studio

The studio space felt thoughtfully designed and the stylish lighting was a real “wow” factor. Branded touches like BLOK mats and signage tied everything together. The setup created a great atmosphere for the class and gave the whole session a professional feel.

Branded yoga mats and the overall layout of the room made it easy to move around and get set up for each section of the class.

The Facilities And Public Areas

The public areas had a stylish, creative feel, with brick feature walls, hanging art, and a sleek coffee bar area that doubled as a welcoming space to relax. The reception area itself felt lively and well thought out, with on-brand signs and design touches that gave the studio personality.

While the space overall was functional, some elements felt a little tight. The changing rooms were on the smaller side, with lockers placed under benches and mirrors directly above, which made accessing them awkward during busier times. Only limited seating for those waiting outside the class. There was no free water refill. Towels were available to rent.

Digital And Technology

The booking process was smooth, and we found it easy to purchase and reserve classes through the app. The website had a sleek, minimal design that reflected the brand well. The club’s social media pages were active, visually consistent with the brand, and helped showcase what to expect.

The only email received was a receipt, which meant there was no information on what to bring, arrival time guidance, or mention of essentials like towels or padlocks.
