BLOK - Clapton

London, UK

The BLOK Story

BLOK was founded in 2016 by Ed Stanbury, Reema Stanbury and Max Oppenheim. Their first location was an old Victorian tram depot in Clapton, London, which was in a state of disrepair. Seeing an opportunity to create something special in a unique space, Ed Stanbury launched a gym that combined a range of concepts such as boxing, HIIT and yoga with striking, unique features such as art, sculptures and a bone broth bar.

BLOK now has three locations, with Shoreditch and Manchester now on the map, as well as an extensive digital platform, BLOKtv.

The Highlights

The studio space was a big stand-out, with interesting design features and elements.

What Our Evaluator Had To Say

The lighting, music, and the coach’s approach made the class an enjoyable experience.

The studio was a great space and the lighting and design added to the experience. The equipment was also of high quality.”

“The coffee bar was impressive and helped create a great atmosphere in the space.”

What To Expect From A BLOK Yoga Session

BLOK offers a diverse range of yoga classes, with seven different practices that have taken traditional yoga and given it a modern, dynamic twist. Class options include the creative and energetic Dynamic Vinyasa; Power Yoga, which focuses on strength and core, and Yoga With Meditation.

The Reception Service

Our pre-visit call to the club was helpful in answering our questions, but lacked enthusiasm.

On arrival at the club, we were greeted promptly and check in was smooth and efficient. On departure, it was difficult ask the reception team questions as they were on smoothie-making duty. More personalization overall would have improved the experience.

The Class Experience

BLOK Clapton received our Recommended rating for the Class Experience.

Our instructor took us through a well-structured and enjoyable class. She was enthusiastic and offered well placed words of encouragement and direction on technique to the class. More assistance with individual form would have improved the experience.

The Equipment And Studio

The lighting and design of the studio space contributed strongly to the experience and were a big highlight. The equipment was high quality and the instructor set everything up before we joined.

The Facilities And Public Areas

Shower towels were available to be rented for £1. Lockers were provided, but you must bring your own padlock. Free water refill stations were not available.

The public areas had a strong sense of place and brand, with nice lighting and design features. The changing rooms, whilst nicely presented, were tight on space.

Digital And Technology

The booking process was quick, although the club sent no information to our evaluator regarding the onboarding process or what should be brought to the club. The brand’s website contained some relevant information on the club such as the class types and timetable.
