Lead with confidence and authority.
At The Fit Guide, we have visited hundreds of clubs across the world and spoken with operators, coaches and managers about what makes a high-performing team. One of the most common traits of success we’ve seen is a culture of great member experiences, starting with strong leadership.
How the leader - in the fitness industry’s case it would often be a fitness manager, head coach or even just the gym owner - guides their team is vital to helping them deliver consistent five-star experiences.
This short guide is packed full of practical tips designed for fitness managers and leaders, taken from 13 years of experience from The Fit Guide co-founder, Jack Thomas.

1. Understand What It Is Like To Be A Coach Or Instructor
It is easy to forget how demanding the job of trainer or instructor can be. Coaching takes energy, both physically and mentally, often across long or split shifts. If you have never coached yourself, take the time to understand the day-to-day reality of the job. It builds empathy and helps you lead with perspective.

2. Communicate Clearly and Consistently
In a club leadership role, you are not just managing instructors. You are also working with reception staff, the cleaning team, other management and perhaps even ownership. Clear communication avoids friction and keeps the whole team aligned, especially when things get busy. Simply put, it’s very useful to have everyone on your team on the same page, and on your side!

3. Give Feedback Regularly
Feedback should never be avoided. Even if some coaches don’t like to always receive it - don’t skip the tough conversation. Great coaches want to grow and develop, and it’s important they know where they stand. Be honest and constructive, and make sure your feedback is coming from a good place, to help them improve.

4. Set The Tone
If you expect your coaches to be professional, punctual and positive, they need to see the same from you. How you show up each day sets the standard for the rest of the team.
